Down Memory Lane with Saigon Pho

Saigon Pho / Saigon BBQ, Flemington

90a The Crescent
Homebush West NSW 2140
(02) 9746 1692

Brunch for 2: We ordered egg noodles with wonton soup, rice paper rolls, pork chops and a glass of coconut juice.

Verdict: Fresh, clean Vietnamese food, great value and a good place to have up your sleeve when you have cravings for pho. Make a trip out of it and do your groceries in Flemington too.

Inside the restaurant - before the lunch crowds come

It’s funny how certain foods and smells conjure up memories from our childhood. I remember coming here as a little girl, and slurping down generous bowls of steaming beef pho. Having lived abroad for a number of years, coming back to Sydney and paying a visit to Flemington, with its vibrant Asian grocery stores and numerous Vietnamese eateries, is always a cheery experience. It had been a while since I last came here – and I visited on this occasion with hubby. Funnily enough, I found out that hubby and family have been coming to this very same Vietnamese restaurant (out of all the ones in Flemington!) for as long as I have (probably longer). The reason is simple: the restaurant is clean, the food is tasty and it’s our favourite one in Flemington.

The service is speedy, and our rice paper rolls arrive promptly after we order. The peanuts and chilli in the accompanying sauce add texture and heat, and I savour the contrast with the refreshing clean taste of the vermicelli.

Asian breakfast 🙂

This time we skip the usually mandatory pho and opt for some egg noodles in a clear broth – something light to start the day. The wontons are big and juicy and it’s a dish that’s easy to like. The pork chops are one of hubby’s favourites – and they taste good, even if they’re probably not good for you. Everything in moderation I say! I love finishing the meal with coconut juice, and I always put in the effort to scrape out the scrumptious pieces of coconut flesh at the bottom of the glass.
